Book of Saturday, ch. 8 — HHHuuummmeee

Putting an end to the three-month empirical inquiry that quickly became a metaphysical one.

Reality check

My take on reality? I use four building blocks. The first block holds intuitively true beliefs (life is unjust). The second block is composed of acquired beliefs that are generally correct (people will die for ideas). The third block is pure fiction (some feelings last for ever). The last block is made of false beliefs that I hold on purpose (violence has never solved anything). At least half of my beliefs are either essentially false, or fictional, or both. Reasonable knowledge accounts for less than 25% of the sum total. Intuition plays a greater role than science. Depending on what I am doing, I will use a different block, but often fail to silence the three others.

Perception

Look straight ahead; never reply with a word in the papers; if in your writings you become polemical, then do not direct your polemic against this or that particular attack; never show that a word of your enemies has had any effect on you; in short, appear as though you did not at all suspect that there was any opposition.

Hitler

You know the “Lost dog” posters you can see in the streets? I want to put one up for a lovely yorkshire called “Adolf Hitler” to see if people call to report him walking down the street past them.
